Rituals to Multiple Joy
I keep pondering the ending to a yoga class I recently took from Rachel Roberts, owner of The Yoga Bar studios in Newport, Kentucky. As we rested in savasana, she told us about a nightly ritual shared by her and her husband. Every evening as their heads hit the pillow, they tell each other three memories of their day:
-
What was your greatest victory today?
-
What brought you joy?
-
What did you see/experience that was beautiful?
What a delightful way to end the day! This is wise too. By allowing sweet thoughts to be the last thing lingering in your mind when you drift off to sleep, you are setting yourself up for a more peaceful, restful full night’s sleep. Have you ever gone to bed trying to solve a problem in your head only to notice in the wee hours of the morning that your mind is still looking for the solution? Sweet, serene thoughts when you close your eyes - sweet serene dreams to follow. In addition, research has shown that by thinking positive emotions like joy, contentment and love, you will see more possibilities in your life and it will help you to thrive both physically and psychologically.
A few other ideas for rituals to invoke more joy into your life:
-
Build a list of songs you love and that make you feel unstoppable. Sing the lyrics out loud as you start your day.
-
Keep a gratitude journal. Add to it at the same time every day
-
Purposefully smile before you get out of bed in the morning.
-
Surround yourself with simple beauty – make a habit of lighting candles and enjoying even just a few fresh picked flowers. Daisies are blooming here. I planted some in my garden last fall, but prior to this I frequently stopped to pick a few on the side of the road on my way home. While in bloom the daisies in my window get refreshed often and each time I see them I can’t help but smile inside.
Have a joy filled week!!
