100 Simple Pleasures Worth Slowing Down For
100 Simple Pleasures Worth Slowing Down For
For far too many years I chased productivity at an unrelenting pace. “Make hay while the sun still shines.” and “Don’t put off until tomorrow, what you can do today.” were frequent phrases heard in my home growing up. I carried them with me like mantras for finding success and happiness well into my adult years… until recently.
In recent years I’ve begun to be open to the opposite of these supposed words of wisdom. I know now that these moments of stillness are where we often find the most profound joy. When we take a step back from our to-do lists and give ourselves permission to simply be and fully experience simple everyday pleasures, we open the door to a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us.
Slowing down and being present feels like a luxury—yet in reality, it's essential for our well-being. I know that when you are working a full time job and you have family members to care for, it seems you don’t have time to slow down for these small moments, but this is when you need them the most. Fortunately, they typically only cost a moment of your time.
Here are some of the benefits you can experience by embracing a slower pace:
Benefits of Slowing Down and Being Present:
- Improved Mental Health: Taking time to be present reduces stress and anxiety, giving your mind a much-needed break.
- Enhanced Relationships: When you're fully present, it is easier to be a better listener and in doing so, you can connect more deeply with others.
- Greater Creativity: Slowing down can boost your creativity by allowing your mind to wander and explore new ideas.
- Increased Productivity: It might sound counterintuitive, but taking breaks and slowing down can actually make you more productive in the long run. It still shocks me how often I find this to be the case.
- Heightened Awareness: Being present helps you notice the beauty in everyday moments, invoking a sense of wonder and feelings of gratitude.
I truly wish I had attempted to slow down sooner in my life–I just didn’t think it was possible until I was so determined to do so that I was willing to make big changes in my life. I now know that you don’t have to upend your lifestyle to practice slowing down. That said, it was a bit of a challenge for me to get started after so many years of burning the candle at both ends. This is why I have decided to host a 31 Day Slow Living Challenge in the month of July. If you’d like to join me, you can find out more information about the challenge here.
In the meantime, to inspire you to embrace a slower pace, here are 100 simple things worth slowing down for. Let these moments remind you that life is made up of the small, yet incredibly meaningful experiences that often go unnoticed. See how many of these you can capture in the coming month.
